music wow lets talk . my brother in-law was the drummer for Downchild Blues Band and toured with Lee Arron , he currently teaches drum lessons in Pickering and runs a Jam night at the ( don't quote this I may be wrong ) Pig and thistle . myself a play a lil guitar and Wii drums lol I guess my biggest claim to fame musically is back in 82 sitting in the Beaches of Toronto with Kim Mitchel aka Max Webster while he played guitar . and my other one would be Darrin " Snow " O'brien ( Informer , RAP song ) we played house league hockey together when we were in pee wee .

but 1 type of music I can NOT stand and I have to hear it daily is Country Crap , the stuff makes the wax in my ears fill up to keep from having to hear it.

I guess my earliest musical memories would have to be when I was a about 5 years old.

1. I loved the song " King of the Road "

2. I got zapped big time while standing on a basement floor holding a '65 Tele and I put my free hand on an Electro Voice mic.

Karen (Lee) and I were in the Metal scene, around the same time.. Don't know her that well, but we did some shows together.. Hear she is doing well out on the West Coast singing more Jazz oriented music, now..

One of my favorite nights in memory, was having Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton & KK Downing join a band I was in at the time, on stage. Funny thing was, the next week we had two members from Iron Maiden do the same thing. In younger years, I played with many big names and was privileged to sit down and learn a lot about the ropes of the road, with many. (Wish I could have done that before one of my 1st managers ripped us off! You can easily get duped, when you are 18 and not focusing on the business side of things. I learned a valuable lesson, though..

Two of my close friends went on with their careers in music to great heights. One plays for Bryan Adams..(previously Kim Mitchell) and the other was with countless performers, the last three big names being: k.d. lang, Cassandra Wilson & Nora Jones. One of my vocal students recorded two albums with Jason Bonham (son of John Bonham.. Led Zeppelin).

"Downchild Blues Band"... Yeah, they were an awesome bunch of Guys..! Put in a lot of roadwork, in their earlier days.

I am a lead-singer, sax-player, songwriter... and I dabble on keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica & flute. I also taught vocals for about ten years..., three of my students going on to International record deals, while one became a great female lead in New York stage-plays. I started part-time in '72.. and went full time in 1979. About five full tours across Canada & the US, hundreds of recordings... and many, many funny road stories to tell. My genres included: Rock, Hard-Rock, Metal, Blues & Jazz. I was also trained in Jazz & Classical, in my younger years.

That's about all the personal details about this that I will divulge on a website. I was in the spotlight for many years and enjoy my anonymity, now...

Seems like the only thing you didn't divulge was your real name an social insurance number.

I thought it was a thread to talk about music, not boast of road stories and failing careers. Sigh!

But I did read it.

Metal?

The downside of the Toronto music scene was it was plagued by a slew of mediocre hard rock bands like Madcats, Moxy, Toronto and Lee Aaron. The only good band to emerge from that scene was Max Webster.

Diversity in music. We ll know that the greatest Canadian band was a diverse little quintet out of Winnipeg. Why? Song writing and musical creativity that couldn't be labeled by a genre.

If it weren't for Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Hawks, Flood and A Foot In Cold Water, Toronto would be remembered as the 70's circuit that saw a boring array of cover bands that frequented the Gasworks and Young Station spawn by Zeppelin worship.

I have to admit though... Welcome To My Nightmare, Rock N Roll Animal and Peter Gabriel's first album are all amazing records. Which probably merits a mention of The Lincolns.

No names given from me, as you notice (what bands I played in).., nor did I mention my song catalogue, any awards, etc... Don't see what the poster above means, because if I wanted to stroke my own horse I would have mentioned names, etc..?

As far as the Toronto music scene and "metal"... There were different years with different genres of Metal.. I sang that stuff in the early stages, before Glam & Thrash & Death Metal..., when singers could still sing & you could still hear the words.. LOL! I then switched to a milder form of Hard Rock, later..

As far as The Gasworks, Larry's Hideaway & The El Mocambo... go, I guess The Stones, Van Halen, Kiss, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Deep Purple and many other big names are all nonviable, then..? LOL! Give me a break

I'm actually hoping that Intransway comes back in here sometime soon, because he has a great band (in my opinion).

I like essentially anything excluding the top 40 pop charts today (especially songs that call for the listener to "raise their glass in the air" like they expect all the Ed Hardy wearing D bags in some crappy dance club to obey them...I am not your robot!), and most techno/electronic. There's a large preference to Prog, funk, blues, ska and college radio station type music.

Sonny I assume you were refering to The Tragically Hip when you said a band out of the Peg , they are possibly my favorite Canadian band of all time as they had a unique sound and their songs reffered to Canada alot. and Seer I will fully agree RAP crap is not music as it is more like the 70's version of poetry reading in a beatnik bar lol. H.B. I guess it's anthem type songs you like , when you are in the crowd at a concert and everyone lights their lighters swaying back and forth and the song fills your head with memories that make you think the song was written just for you lol. I can respect that as well .

I'm pretty easy going when it comes to music, I usually let my friends or brother-in-law pick the tracks to most things cause they're a lot more into controlling the stereo than I am.

I guess if I'm into anything I'm more into the mainer-stream alt/indie-rock or indie-pop stuff, bands like Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie, Neon Trees, The 88, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Still under the indie banner I guess, but not exactly super obscure either.
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."
