Calling it now, we're losing Eakins soon, maybe as early as next season

He was obviously really expecting the big job with the big club and according to Burke he was pretty disappointed when Carlyle was brought aboard. And Burkie said in his presser that he wouldn't be surprised if he gets hired elsewhere, comparing him to Kevin Dineen who left the Portland Pirates (Ducks AHL affiliate) this year to coach the Florida Panthers.

He is not going to be cooling his heels for 3 years waiting for Carlyle to get fired, especially after how long Burkie put up with Wilson.

The only question left is how long before he gets an offer? Next season the season after?
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."

What's the point of this? You can't dwell on what ifs.

Hard to say.. But for the heck of it I'll guess sometime next year.. Maybe with Columbus?

All the best to Eakins if he leaves... he deserves it. I think Burke did him a favour by not making him the coach... let him go for a Calder Cup and earn his NHL lumps in another NHL city.

No matter what, he got his start in Toronto, and if he leaves on good terms (Calder Cup win), he'll always be open to coming back down the road.

Boredom alleviation?

What was the point of the 800 threads obsessing over Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan?

What's the point of you asking what the point of a thread is? If you don't see a point just don't post about it.

Makes a better thread subject.

He's not an nhl coach.

why would he give up his job with the marlies.

Most likely he will get an assistant coaching job in the nhl at some point.

Same as Muller did.

But he's already been an assistant and is really unhappy that he isn't the Leafs coach today. He'll be gone with the first good offer that comes along.

He's trying to get his post count up, maybe..? ;) Just like the ones where he posts.....

" . " ... as his whole post (and yet, complains about everyone else's posts?)

I think Eakins should stick around for a few years (while he takes the MARLIES to the championship game a few times.. ;) ) ,. Remember what Burke also said about "tough coaches not usually lasting more than 3-4 years with a club, if..." ? I am not saying that Randy can't do this, but I would hate to see him leave, if Eakins was already gone somewhere else... Guess we could always try and hire him back, though..?

Still. I agree, Taco... He might be snagged, because he is really one of the best teachers I have seen work with the Marlies.. EVER!

I was all for Eakins at first. However I don't know a lot about him before last season... How long has he been around and is this the best he's ever done with a team?

Marlies could probably lose ALL of their last games and still be in the playoffs, this season..

TOR 57 32 19 4 2 70..1st place (in Division)
RCH 57 26 22 6 3 61,,, 2nd place

I posted their stats in today's GT..

I'm not going to worry about what the future holds or what we don't know. What's going to be is going to be. I for one hope eakins takes the high road and stays on but if not it's okay. We should be concentrating on supporting this team and cheering on Randy Carlyle, not wondering who is going where and wanting it all blown up.

how does one become a coach in the nhl if being a coach in the nhl can only be done by having experience as a coach in the nhl? lol. i hate that line of reasoning. true, i wouldnt have implemented eakins for the remainder of this year - but if he can keep going strong with the marlies (and based on his assistant experience at nhl level).. i dont see why he couldnt have been given a chance next year as head coach. it would be SO nice to see someone at the helm who consistently uses positive reinforcement and is a great motivator rather than intimidator.

having said all that (and even tho im still skeptical).. there's some definite positives to the way carlyle coaches.. and all we can do now is hope for the best for all parties involved - especially our leafs :]

Considering it is Toronto, and yes I realize Eakins has served as an assistant. But, again, consider: This is Toronto. Not some stupid small market where the media is not in your face 24/7. Burkie is right, Eakins has NEVER coached a real game by himself as the main man behind the bench in his life. If the leafs were winning and gong to the playoffs regularly and all was rosy and peachy keen, then ya, I would say go with eakins. But with a young team down on itself struggling and not knowing what it's like tow in for like 8 frigging years, then ya, you need experience. Think of where the leafs are right now! Can you imagine if Eakins fails to get them going? Can you imagine if he falters and can't get them into the playoffs either? The fans won't put up with it, they would run him out of town, and what's worse, us losing Eakins to another team, and hiring him back when needed? Or losing him for EVER because we ran him out of town because he FAILS?

I guess what I'm saying is if he's doing well with the marlies great leave him there then. Why throw a guy into the fire or make him the sacrificial lamb so to speak if you don't have to?

I wouldn't be shocked if the Flames courted him this offseason.

Sportsnet ran a story back in April that he was a serious candidate for the job in Calgary.

I hope we dont lose him, especially to a rival team. I think Burke should have let Wilson finish the season out and watched how the Marlies did in the playoffs before making his decision.

Oilers just let go of Renney.

I always thought Edmonton would be a good place for Eakins. Young talented team that needs help with their defensive game.

My money is on Eakins as head coach of Calgary next season. Thank franchise needs a 180 degree change from the Sutter era and Eakins would be soooooo perfect for that.

Not a Flames fan at all, but if I was, getting Eakins behind the bench would make me happy.
