Leafs Wrap Up Final Game Of The Season Against Canadiens

MAPLE LEAFS (35-36-10) at CANADIENS (30-35-16)
TV: CBC (HD)
Last 10: Toronto 4-4-2; Montreal 2-3-5

Season Series: This is the series and season finale for two teams who have a long and frustrating off-season to look forward to. The Maple Leafs won three of the first five meetings this season, including the most recent one on March 3. That night, Erik Cole opened the scoring before former Canadien Mikhail Grabovski scored twice in the third period to give the Leafs a 3-1 win.

Big Story: This game may have implications only for next week's Draft Lottery, but that doesn't mean it will be lacking for passion and excitement -- not with two of the NHL's oldest rivals on the same rink.

Team Scope:

Maple Leafs: The Randy Carlyle era in Toronto began March 2 following the firing of coach Ron Wilson, and the Leafs responded the following night with their 3-1 win in Montreal before proceeding to go 3-8-2 under their new coach. But the Leafs have since picked up their play, gaining five of a possible six points in their last three games.
That run includes Thursday night's game in Toronto against the Lightning, when the Leafs overcame a pair of one-goal deficits before captain Dion Phaneuf's overtime goal gave them a 3-2 win.
"We struggled at home for a while, no one was happy about it. We have not been playing the way that we want to play," said Phaneuf, who has just three points in his last 15 games. "But we wanted to finish our year off, our last game at home in front of our fans, the way we [did]."
Canadiens: After closing out the month of March with a 1-3-4 record, Montreal got back on the winning track with an impressive 5-2 win over the Lightning on Wednesday in which they shut down Stamkos. They played again the following night in Raleigh but lost 2-1 in a shootout.
"We have to get ready to give 100% in our last game now. There's nothing else to save it for," goaltender Peter Budaj, who is expected to make his fourth consecutive start in place of injured Carey Price, told the team's website.
Who's Hot: Toronto's Tim Connolly has three points in his last four games while Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel both have four points in their last three games. … For Montreal, Max Pacioretty has four points in his last three games and Erik Cole has four goals in his last five games.

Injury Report: Toronto is missing Joffrey Lupul (separated shoulder), James Reimer (upper body), Nikolai Kulemin (broken finger), and Carl Gunnarsson (separated shoulder) while Jonas Gustavsson and Grabovski are both questionable with lower-body injuries. … Price (concussion) has been shut down for the remainder of the season while Yannick Weber (lower body), Brian Gionta (bicep surgery), Mathieu Darche (upper body), Travis Moen (upper body), Scott Gomez (concussion), and Raphael Diaz (lower body) are all on IR.

Stat Pack: The Leafs and Canadiens have closed out the season against one another in four of the last five seasons, with Montreal boasting a 2-1-1 advantage in those matchups.Gionta has led the offensive charge the past two seasons, with three goals in the last two Montreal-Toronto season finales.

Puck Drop: Both teams have been led in the crease lately by unlikely sources. Since being called up last week,Ben Scrivens has gone 2-0-1 for the Leafs, making 103 saves in those three games. Budaj hasn't been too shabby either since Price was shut down for the season, starting the last three games and going 1-0-2 with a .936 save percentage.

I can never root for the Habs to beat us. Even though I know it's the best outcome for the future.

C'mon Phil Kessel Hat Trick!

its a must lose... If we lose we get a forsure lotto pick. If we win we wont be in the lottery unless 3 teams we need to win get a win. Isles play Columbus, if they win and we lose we get the 4th last spot! WHY ISNT PRICE STARTING? We need him in there!

Well Seer you have to admit that is pretty obvious my friend. If we were playing beach volleyball against dallas cheer-leaders that is probably the ONLY time I would want the boys to lose. But come to think of it, as male fans, we would likely win anyhow regardless of the score of the game. As long as the girls danced in their bikinis after wards I'd die a happy man....lol.

A Blast From The Past

1967 Stanley Cup Finals

The 1967 Stanley Cup Final was a best-of-seven series played between the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs would win the series four games to two to win their thirteenth Stanley Cup. As of 2011, this is Toronto's most recent Stanley Cup championship, most recent appearance in the championship final, and with the Chicago Blackhawks ending a 49-year Cup drought with their victory in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, is the longest-active championship drought in the NHL. The 1967 Stanley Cup Final was also the last Stanley Cup Final in the Original Six Era.

The average age of the Leafs' players was 31, the oldest lineup to win the Cup Johnny Bower was 42 and Allan Stanley was 41. Dave Keon won the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Montreal won the opener 6–2, soundly trouncing Toronto. For the second game, Terry Sawchuk was replaced with Bower and provided the Leafs with a shutout win 3–0. Bower was in net for game three won 3–2 on Bob Pulford's overtime goal. This game has been described as "one of the most exciting games ever played".

Bower was injured before game four and Sawchuk had to take over. Al Smith was called up from the minors to served as back-up for the fourth and fifth games. The Canadiens defeated the Leafs 6–2 again, this time in Toronto to even the series. Sawchuk would play very well in the next two games, backstopping the Leafs to the Cup. In the sixth game Bower returned to the line-up as back up. Jim Pappin scored his seventh goal of the playoffs and Sawchuk stopped 41 shots helping Toronto win the cup. Pappin had four goals and four assists in the Final series.

Will Maple Leafs Joey Crabb Return Next Season?

He’s enjoying his best NHL season and has been a key member of Randy Carlyle’s main checking unit when called upon.

But there’s no guarantee that Joey Crabb, 29, will be wearing a Maple Leafs uniform next season.
He’s an unrestricted free agent this summer, coming off a one-year, two-way contract that paid him $750,000 in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL.

His play this season is likely to attract an interest of more than few NHL teams.

“I’ve been through this quite a few times. I think this is my third or fourth time being an unrestricted free agent and I’ve always signed one- or two-year contracts so I’m going to approach it just the same,” Crabb said earlier this week.

“Obviously, you like to know where you’re going to play next year. But hopefully I’m back here. And hopefully they feel the same way. Beyond hoping is basically all that I can control.”

Unlike past years, the 6-foot-1 forward has played a far more significant role this season.

With 11 goals and 15 assists, this has been the Alaskan-born forward’s best NHL campaign. He scored 3 goals and 12 assists in 48 games last season for the Leafs. In 2008, he scored 4 goals and 5 assists for the Atlanta Thrashers. His best pro season was in 2009 when he scored 24 goals and 29 assists for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves before signing with Toronto for the following season.

It might come as a surprise but Crabb has four game-winning goals, tied with Clarke MacArthur for second on the Leafs behind Phil Kessel’s leading six. He also is tied with David Steckel for most shorthanded goals (2) and leads the team in plus/minus with a plus 3.

Crabb, who was drafted by the New York Rangers in the seventh round in 2002, had a solid second half for the Leafs last season, but he didn’t make the team out of training camp. But he got off to a good start with the Marlies with 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in nine games. He was then brought up to the Leafs.

He’s played 66 games this season and has been a healthy scratch four times.

Crabb’s style seems to have been a perfect fit for Carlyle.

“He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Carlyle said. “I think he’s surprised some people with his goal scoring. He’s killed penalties. He scored earlier in the year and then he went through a flat spot but he and Steckel and (Tim) Connolly have formed a checking line for us when they’ve been healthy.”

Crabb has also enjoyed playing for Carlyle.

“He emphasizes defence first,” Crabb said. “I’ve been primarily on a checking role and I like doing that. I think the points have kind of been a bonus.

“I’ve gotten some confidence. Sometimes when there isn’t a huge emphasis on points, they come a little bit easier. I’ve just been focusing for the most part on shutting down the other team’s top line.”

It’s a role he relishes.

“I like doing that. I’ve done that a lot in my career,” Crabb said. “I love it. Anytime you can shut down another team’s top line on the score sheet is pretty rewarding, just as much as scoring a goal.”
