This summer the Leafs need a goaltender, a veteran, a Top 6 forward and free up cap space. I think the Leafs will need to make 2 trades and 2 free agent signings to meet their needs.

Signing 1: Sign forward Shane Doan to a 2 year 6.5 million dollar contract ( veteran )

Signing 2: Sign Martin Biron to a 3 year 7.5 million dollar contract ( goalie )

Trade 1: Trade Franson, Bozak, Gustufson, MacArthur, Connoly, 4th round pick for Jordan Staal( top 6 forward)

Trade 2: mike komarsrek and army for islanders 4th

Roster after trades and signings:

kessel staal; Lupul
fratin grabo doan
kulie colberone kadri
brown stekel crabb
aston, lombardi

Pheanuf Gardiner
schenn gunnerson
Liles blacker
holzer

Reimer
Biron

I don't even know why I am responding but it's Sunday I'm stuck at work for the next 12 hrs so why not...

Signing 1) Doan is not leaving Phoenix, he has been with them since they moved from Winnipeg. Doan is going to be with them till they either move oe he will retire as a Coyote.

Signing 2) Biron on a team with good defense puts up respectable numbers, however on a team with poor defensive numbers (Islanders in 09-10 was a .896 sv% and a 3.27 GAA) plus if we were to make the playoffs he never could get it done in Philly with the stacked teams they had.

Trade 1) First Gustavsson is a UFA we can't trade him, Franson is an RFA and his rights can be traded. Now Bozak(1.5m cap), MacArthur(3,25m cap), Connolly(4,75m cap), plus our 4th round pick. For Staal (4m cap), when currently the Penguins have a cap space for next year of $4,733,333. How exactly do the Penguins even remotely want to make this deal?

Trade 2) Komisarek(4,5m cap) Armstrong(3m cap) for the current number 4 pick where they are projected to pick Murray. Now I know the Islanders have a ton of cap space this upcoming season currently $25,167,667. However they need to resign or pick up numerous players to fill spots. The thing is the Islanders never spend to the cap limit and I can't see them wanting to take on more bad contracts then what they already have(DiPietro and Yashin).

Hahahah exactly I know the Islanders are a joke, but that was more in the days when Milbury was running the show as GM. To think Komisarek and Armstrong could fetch a 1st rnd number 4 pick hhahahahaha I needed a good chuckle today and I guess this thread did it for me.

I been a leaf fan since the last cup in 1967, and the leafs are sold out every game, and still faithful leaf fans have to suffer through another non play off appearance. We need a goalie, a veteran goalie. If the leafs trade ,Connelly MacArthur, Komasarek, Kulemin,Schenn, and add a pick or cash to any deal , frre up some cash then add some much need size, a good centre a little toughness on defense and a scorer. Kadri, Franzen, Zigamanis, Colburne these guys are the future, let them play or move which ever one necessary to get some help up front. Now, not that it will ever happen, but talk is that Roberto Luongo could be moved , Rick Nash, and possibly Jordan Stall. There will be heavy prices to pay for any of these guys, but the leafs need to improve or next season could be a non playoff year again. Theres no question, changes have to be made, money spent.Leafs fans deserve better for all the dedication and for supporting the leafs.

We have a few pieces we just need to add some more now. I agree, so what if we are at the cap, having the money and spending has never been a problem in toronto. We have been guilty of spending too much on the wrong guys. Now is burke's chance to make good and bring in some reinforcements, impact players, quality proven veterans.

We should consider bernier, or maybe possibly halak through free agency, halak is more than capable of back up duty and if reimer ***** up again he can carry the load, so even better for us :) Defense needs some work...hopefully holzer is ready but we could use more...schenn for jvr i have no problem with. Mueller is a big guy, and seems like a burke kind of guy but we need more. Guys like moen might be available. Is there any way we can go after tavares? What is the cost for rick nash are we really giving up too much to take that on?

Bottom line is burke has no choice but to improve this team and do it NOW this off-season...good luck, his *** is riding on it.

We need help in 4 departments, toughness, leadership, in zone defense and center ice men. We should draft Matt Dumba sign Jason Arnott and trade for Ryan Clowe. And give the kids a real shot. I think Carlyle needs a good shutdown forward line, he needs an offensive forward with some size and he needs toughness and he needs some leadership to help Phaneuf... With getting Arnott and Clowe we cover a lot of those issues, and we wouldnt have to give away the future to get them.

Darren Helm and Ryan Clowe are the guys i think would work greatly in Carlyles system... Brayden Schenn would be a huge pickup but we would need to give up our first, i would do it but i think it would be 1st plus a lot... Our trade bait is Franson Macarthur and some prospects... I like a trade like this Franson Bozak and Blacker for Darren Helm plus a low value AHLer... I know thats a TON for Helm but i think he could be an essential piece in our team with Carlyle behind the bench... Hes got tons of speed and work ethic, plus he can grind in the boards well. I like Arnott Grabovski Helm Steckel and Colborne up the middle, a good combo of size and speed. The heart of the team is the centers the top 3 d and the goalies, scoring wingers like Kessel and Lupul are huge for your power play and your season but in the playoffs those are the key players. Then you trade Mac and our 2nd rounder for Clowe...

Lupul-Grabovski-Kessel
Clowe-Arnott-Kadri
Crabb-Helm-Kulemin
Rosehill-Steckel-Brown

Phaneuf-Gunner
Gardiner-Schenn
Liles-Komisarek
Holzer/Percy

Thats a team i think Carlyle can work with... I know the second line looks weak but i think that line will actually produce a lot, more then our 2nd line did this year... And the third line can score too, and they have good work ethic and they can shutdown other teams, the only thing that needs work is the defense, we can work on that through free agency, and if we draft Dumba he will be ready soon enough... And if Gardiner and Schenn and even Holzer develop well plus Dumba Percy Gunner Phaneuf then we have a strong D...

^^ still need a goalie though. I'm convinced Reimer is a backup at best.

Lupul-Oshie-Kessel

Van Reimsdyk-Grabo-Semin

Bertuzzi/kadri-Arnott/Galchenyuk-Kulemin

Ross/D'amigo-Steckel-Brown/Frattin

Carle-Franson
Gardiner-Schenn
Gunnerson-Holzer

Vokoun
Reimer

Free Agents
Sign vokoun for 2 yrs @ 3.5 mil per year. Matt Carle for around 4 a year. Arnott 1 Year @ 3.4. Overpay Semin just to get him to T.O for 3 yrs @ 7-7.2 mil. Re-sign Franson at 3.2 a season. Trade for Oshie's rights and sign him 4 years @ around 4 mil per year.

Trades
Try and give Philly Phaneuf instead of Schenn for JVR. Detroit will want a defensive prospect so I'd give them Blacker + Macarthur for Bertuzzi who is still signed for 2 more year with a cap hit of 2 mil each year.

This adds both scoring depth and experience to the roster. Komi, Connolly, Lombardi, Bozak, Liles can be packaged into a trade or dumped for picks.
