Marlies Too Much For Abbotsford
It had to end eventually. The Abbotsford Heat's magical run of 11 straight wins came to a halt Thursday. The Heat couldn't capitalize on the ad-vantage over the Toronto Marlies, despite opening the scoring on a goal from Jon Rheault just past the midway point of the first period. A few minutes later, the Marlies took over.
They scored twice late in the opening frame, including Matt Frattin's third of the post-season, with 24 seconds remaining before intermission. Frattin's goal turned out to be the winner, but Toronto still added three more to defeat the Heat 5-1 in Game 2 of the best-of-seven AHL Western Conference semifinal. Now tied at one-game apiece, the series shifts back to Abbotsford for Games 3, 4 and, 5.
Game 3 goes Saturday 7 p.m. PDT at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. "We got the start that we wanted, getting up 1-0, playing hard, getting shots on net," said Rheault, in a phone interview after the loss. "We just kind of lost a little bit when they went up 2-1 at the end of the first. We just didn't keep that even keel, got a little too low and it was just tough. It's one loss. You're going to lose in the playoffs, there's no doubt about that. It's how we respond now."
Taylor, who made his fifth consecutive start in these playoffs and stopped a Will Acton third-period penalty shot with the game out of reach for Abbotsford, was beaten four times on 27 shots. At the other end, Ben Scrivens allowed just the one goal on 35 shots.
