You try to package up guys that don't fit, you do not get rid of a 40 goal scorer and handcuff your offense. I say, stupid trade.

Why trade one of the only guys to continually put up 30 goals for the past several years for Staal?
Only way I get rid of Kessel is if another proven 30 goal man is coming back the other way.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."

Trade Kessel who last year was, 6th in goals, 21st in assists, and 6th in points.....
For Staal who was, 53rd in goals, 151st in assists, and 96th in points....
I know Staal is better defensively but your trading a top ten scorer in the league away for a guy who last year barely cracked the top 100.

Staal can't carry a team, as evident by when he couldn't carry the Pens when Crosby/Malkin were both injured. Its funny how a couple of good playoff games really make people forget his past. He would be great to have, but he isn't a clear cut #1 center. He would be a perfect #2 center, who would score on our first line?

LOL!
Why don't you guys actually stop drinking the BB koolaid for a second and think this through?
The Penguins can't keep all 3 and Staal does everything. He is signed for $4m next year and had 25g in 62g. I think he would be a great fit for Carlyle's system. He was also injured btw. I predict Kessel will suffer under Carlyle...his PPG went down significantly once Carlyle took over. He might continue to be a 30g scorer but nothing more. Easily replaceable...
I can't believe I actually agree with Damien Cox...go figure...

A first line winger for a 2nd line center who has only gotten 50 points once.
Terrible idea. Then again, i'm not surprised considering who the OP is.

I'm not sure that Pittsburgh would want a Kessel in exchange for Staal. If they are going to have cap problems resigning him, they might want some youth and some depth on defense. He's certainly a kid that the Leafs should take a look at if he's available.
Maybe Maplers....but Kessel is signed for another 2 seasons, which might be enough. But you're probably right. Pittsburgh won't do that deal because they know that Staal is more valuable than Kessel. That being said...they are stacked at centre and they might be looking for more options on the wing. Kessel definitely brings them scoring and gives them two high profile scoring lines. It could be a win - win. We really don't need Kessel as much as we need a big centre that can play both ends of the ice, log 20min per game and can score...

I'm sure there could be a better deal made that would work for both clubs.

If we're going to make a trade for Staal, I'd want to see us give up some combination of roster d-men/prospects/later-round picks.

After the year Kessel had though and some injury risk that comes with Staal, I can't help but think they'd have to sweeten the pot a little (like a 3rd round pick or something). Has that selling the brakes to buy new tires kinda feel too it as well. We'd just be all in on Nash or someone then I'm assuming because they'd need a new go top winger.

I thought about this a little, I dont see the purpose in given up kessel, but Lupol yes with a prospect etc. no problem, this would add some grit and size for pittsburgh, would work for me. I love jordan staal would do it for schenn aswell.
Lupul would be more reasonable...personally, I`d rather not give up any of the pieces that were actually working well for us this year though.
