Kadri, Frattin And Scrivens Lead
As Marlies Beat Heat 4-1 For 2-1 Series Lead

Posted Image

Marlies up 2-1 Toronto Marlies' Marcel Mueller, left, celebrates his goal against Heat goalie Leland Irving as Brett Carson looks on during the third period of Game 3 of an AHL Western Conference semifinal playoff series in Abbotsford, B.C., on Saturday. The Marlies won, 4-1, to take a 2-1 series lead.

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. The Toronto Marlies relied on three of their biggest names for a win on Saturday night.
Nazem Kadri scored 58 seconds into the game and Matt Frattin scored the eventual winner 10 minutes later to lead the Marlies to a 4-1 victory over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League playoff action.

“Naz was fired up before the game,” said Toronto goalie Ben Scrivens. “It was obvious to everyone in the room that he wanted to have a bit one. He got the game off on the right foot for not only himself but the rest of the team.”

Scrivens made 20 saves as Toronto pulled ahead 2-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series. That early goal benefited the entire team.

“Anytime you can score early, it sets the tone for the rest of the game,” said Scrivens. “Everyone’s a little bit more relaxed.”

Frattin’s goal was a solo effort, stealing the puck from Abbotsford defenceman Clay Wilson.

“We were just trying to get hard on our forechecks,” said Frattin. “I just stripped Wilson a little bit, tried to get the shot around the defenceman and on net and it was lucky enough to beat (Heat goaltender Leland) Irving.”
Phillippe Dupuis and Marcel Mueller each had a goal and an assist for the Marlies, while Nicolas Deschamps added three assists.

Dustin Sylvester scored for Abbotsford.

Irving made 22 saves for the Heat in his first start since the regular season finale. Danny Taylor was on extended winning streak prior to Thursday’s loss for the Heat.

“Leland played well,” said Wilson. “They had breakaways, opportunities that he stopped that kept it close. He made good stops and played the puck well.”

Regardless of who plays in net for Abbotsford, Toronto knows that the keys to the game are the same.

“It doesn’t matter who they have in there — they’re both good goalies over there,” said Scrivens. “We’ve got to get pucks to the net and capitalize when we get opportunities.”

Kadri picked up his third of the playoffs with a wraparound goal.

“That wrap around is one I’ll stop 99 out of 100,” said Irving. “After that it was just about playing my game and being patient.”

Frattin made it 2-0 at 11:43, stealing the puck near centre, and his shot deflected off Chris Breen’s stick and in for his fourth of the post-season.

“I saw him coming with speed, all alone, so I just tried to get it by him,” said Wilson. “He had a good stick, came down and made a good shot.”

Frattin has scored in each game of the series.

The Heat got on the board early in the second frame when Sylvester deflected a Clay Wilson point shot for his third of the playoffs at 2:21.

Ten minutes later Dupuis put the puck through Irving’s legs from the side of the net and it slowly made its way across the goal-line.

“We came out good in the second,” said Wilson. “We had a good push. But when they came back and scored that third goal, it put us on our heels again.”

Irving struggled much of the night, fighting off a lot of pucks, but made a stellar breakaway save off of Greg Scott to keep his team within two.

However, with just over five minutes to go in the game Dupuis set up Mueller who finished off a give-and-go at 14:46.

Abbotsford finished 0-for-4 on the power play and are now 0-for-16 in the series. Toronto’s penalty killing unit has been tops AHL most of the season and was one of the keys to the win.

“Our best PK is trying to stay out of the box,” said Frattin. “But the last two games we’ve been killing quite a bit. We’ve got a lot of guys who know how to do the job and we’re definitely confident in them.”

Of course, a hot goaltender is the best penalty killer. Scrivens was that, despite only needing to make six saves over the final 20 minutes.

“He’s a confident kid,” said Frattin. “It doesn’t matter if they just scored, he’ll get back on his feet and start playing like we know he can. He’s definitely our backbone. We’re just trying to get some goals for him. He’s keeping us in games and winning some for us.”

Scrivens is now leading the Calder Cup playoffs with a 1.68 goals-against average, allowing just 10 goals, along with his second-best 0.939 save percentage.

“In this league, especially when you have a goalie like Ben Scrivens down there, you have to get lots of pucks and traffic in front of him,” said Irving.

Maple Leafs Realize You Can Keep A
Good (Young) Man Down

Posted Image
Under the Maple Leafs' new mindset, prospect Stuart Percy, the 25th overall selection in the 2011 draft,
is unlikely to be rushed into the NHL simply because he was first-round pick.

ABBOTSFORD, B.C.—There was a time not so long ago when being a first-round pick automatically elevated a highly regarded teenager to the top of the Maple Leaf depth chart.

Desperation and hockey politics often all but guaranteed that would be the case. If a youngster could play right away, he had to have been a smart draft pick, right?

Thirty years ago, that meant Jim Benning, Fred Boimistruck and Bob McGill all joined the Leaf blueline in the same season before they were 20. Back in 1996, it meant young defenceman Jeff Ware was force-fed into NHL work.

Four years ago, there was the decision that Luke Schenn should play as an 18-year-old. It’s becoming clear now just how much that may have cost Schenn and the Leafs.

Well, those days appear to be gone for the Leafs. Who knows, maybe for good.

You just had to be sitting beside Stuart Percy high in the end zone of the Abbotsford Sports and Entertainment Centre on Saturday night to get a vivid understanding of how things have changed.

The Leafs used to be the team that rushed teenagers to the NHL.

These days, they won’t even rush them to the AHL.

After being picked 25th overall last June and then playing this season with the Mississauga St. Mike’s Majors, the 18-year-old Percy joined the Marlies for the playoffs and skated in all three games of the first round in the sweep over Rochester, acquitting himself well.

But then second-year man Jesse Blacker returned from a shoulder problem, and Percy found himself in the press box, waiting for another turn while Blacker, Jake Gardiner, Korbinian Holzer, Mark Fraser, Juraj Mikus and Simon Gysbers defend against the Abbotsford Heat in this best-of-seven series.

It’s even possible Blacker may also be pushed out of the lineup for Game 4 Tuesday night by Matt Lashoff, out with a knee injury since October, which would knock Percy down another notch.

“They know I’m here if they need me,” said the soft-spoken Percy as he watched a Marlie win in Game 3 from on high.

The Leafs are obviously aware that Percy did have a concussion this season and needs to get stronger to play against professionals, but it’s also about an altered mindset within the organization.

“NHL players have to be men,” said Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle, who is in B.C. with the Marlies.
“Everyone wants to see 18-year-olds and 19-year-olds in the NHL. But it’s a process. They’re not ready.”

Loiselle speaks from experience. As the 23rd overall pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 1981, Loiselle was a good scorer in junior hockey who found himself playing NHL games just a few months after being drafted and then was yanked up and down between junior, the AHL and the NHL over the next few years.

“The fact that I wasn’t able to develop at the right stage, I think, held me back,” said Loiselle. “Eventually, I had to reinvent myself. I had to become a checking centre. I never became the scorer I was in junior.

“The same year I was drafted, Detroit took Gerard Gallant in the sixth round. He played his full junior career, then two full years in the minors, and when he got to the NHL he stayed up and ended up on a line with Steve Yzerman.”

The Wings over the years have become an NHL club that keeps prospects with their Grand Rapids team as long as possible. It pays off both in the finished product and in the fact it helps to keep salary costs on those players down when it comes to their second NHL contract, an important consideration in a cap world.

So even if Nazem Kadri cracks the Leaf lineup next season, it will be difficult for him to hit a home run on his second contract because he’s been mostly in the minors the past two seasons. For an organization that gets an inordinate amount of national attention for who is and who isn’t playing for its minor-league operation, it’s smart business but difficult to stay on that course.

For Percy, meanwhile, it’s unlikely he’ll get elevated hastily just because he was a first-rounder.

“I want to get to the NHL as fast as possible,” said the smooth, puck-moving rearguard. “But there’s nothing negative about being in the AHL.”

Percy’s from Oakville, and he’s one who sees the advantages of playing junior hockey in the GTA and having the Marlies in the same city as the Leafs.

“It inspires you even more,” he said. “The CN Tower, the ACC lights flashing on game day, it all makes you dream about being there, about being part of the big show.”

No rush, young man.

The games tonight & tomorrow night are on LeafsTV...

Can you ever stop complaining, Guy..?

The HOME games are on Rogers.. and the AWAY games are on LeafsTV..., BUT...

..ALL the games are repeated on LeafsTV...

If people have little interest in the Marlie games because of this, it doesn't say much about their dedication, to me... I'd listen to the radio, get morse code, or read smoke signals about the game..

You work with what you have... and complaining about something from yesterday isn't going to change it's outcome..

you still haven't paid one bit of attention. I want ALL the games, not half. I am not happy with just away games. If leafs tv were to host ANY, it SHOULD have b een the home games because thats where the support is, where its going to be the loudest.. etc.

So again, since you never seem to read all my posts I have been and will be upset over the fact that NOT ALL GAMES ARE ON LEAFS TV LIKE THEY SHOULD. THere are others who feel this way, but i guess they feel content with having shitty audio feeds on leafs tv. I dunno. TO me, it seems like a half assed effort to make their fans happy.

Maybe you are content with the radio, I'm not. Yes, I am 25 years old. YOu are older hen me. I didn't live through radio. So i dont give a **** for radio. YOu dont see anything, you just hear wha the commentator says and hope he didn't miss something. Or watch highlights which never shows the true story of the game.

And again, because you never actually read all my posts, no one likes to watch repeats. Why on earth would i want to watch a game tha i already know the result of? Wheres the excitment? Oh guys, this guy is ABOUT to score, oh no, hes clearly not missing this shot because i already knew about this. SUddenly that shot isn't asimpressive as it would be live. I would think you would atleast understand where I am coming from. But you clearly dont read my posts because every post you write says the same thing.

BUT WAIT THEY ARE ON JUST REPEATED. OH AND DONT FORGET GUYS THEY DO SHOW AWAY GAMES. Like I really care about the away games.

Hey... I told you way back, that I agree with you about them needing more broadcasts.. You just keep going on & on & on about it, Guy...

I would like to see all the games on LeafsTV, too..., Cal.. But complaining about it and not following Marlie Games because of that, is not going to change anything & it is kind of childish... Maybe they will change this after Rogers?Bell takes full control.. (which brings Sportsnet back into the equation for more games, too).

As far as "not being able to see" something, because it is not in your face, that kind of makes me a little sad, about today's generation... Would you not listen to music, without a video..? Could you paint a picture, without a subject for it in from of you..? Could you write a book, from your head..?

All of these things take a little imagination... Without being able to envision (at least a part of) a hockey game from a radio broadcast, is telling me that you must not dream very much..?

I know it's easier, better and whatever else... to watch a game live.. And by the way.., I read EVERYONE's posts COMPLETELY, so don't "assume" you know what I am doing.. If I don't comment back to you about something, it is because I either probably have already in previous posts, or.. I just don't care to respond to you about it..

Yes.. I noticed... Thought it was maybe because of "probationary curfews"..? (Just joking..)
I'm just going to take a wild stab at a guess..:

Maybe the ventilation system doesn't work very well.. It is a small arena... and... the Maintenance Staff gather before games to share a meal: beer, beans, pickled eggs and goat cheese...

It could be dangerous..!
