Marlies Announce 2012-13 Regular Season Schedule

Reigning Western Conference Champions Open the Season Against Division Rival Rochester.

A proud member of the American Hockey League, the Toronto Marlies announced Friday, their 76 game 2012-13 regular season schedule, which begins on Saturday, October 13 versus the Rochester Americans, AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, at Ricoh Coliseum at 5:00 p.m.

Weekend games dominate the Marlies home schedule this season as the team will play 29 of their 38 home games on weekend dates. The weekend home game schedule is highlighted by 17 Saturday games. The team will also play 11 home games on Sunday afternoons and one home game on Friday night. Remaining home games are comprised of one game on Monday, one game on Tuesday and seven games on Wednesday. The team’s only Monday home game will be played on February 18 (Family Day) at Ricoh Coliseum at 1:00 p.m. against the Houston Aeros.

2012-13 marks the second consecutive year that the Marlies will play a regular season outdoor game. On Sunday, December 30 at 7:00 p.m., the Marlies will take on the Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, at Comerica Park in Detroit.
On Wednesday, December 26, the Marlies will host the Hamilton Bulldogs at Air Canada Centre. The Marlies will play their lone game at Air Canada Centre against the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. Toronto will also play three school day games during the 2012-13 regular season. The team’s school day games will be on February 6 vs. Hamilton, March 6 vs. Syracuse and April 3 vs. Lake Erie. Each game will start at 11:00 a.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies will also play one road school day game on November 11 at 10:35 a.m. in Oklahoma City.

The Marlies longest homestand runs from February 23 to March 16 and includes 10 straight games on home ice. The 10-game home stretch begins with a contest against Milwaukee and ends with a game against division rival Rochester. The club’s longest road trip of the season will take place in November. The road trip starts and finishes with a game against North Division rival Hamilton on October 26 and November 16, respectively. All eight road games during the trip will be played against Western Conference opponents, four of which are games against divisional opponents.

In all, the Marlies take-on 18 of 29 potential opponents. Of the 38 divisional games that the Marlies will play, the team faces its QEW-rival Hamilton a total of 12 times, the most of any 2012-13 opponent (six in each city). The remaining 26 divisional games will consist of 10 games against Rochester (five in each city), and eight games against both Lake Erie and Abbotsford (four in each city). The Abbotsford Heat, AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, rejoin the North Division after spending one season in the AHL’s West Division.

The Marlies will close out the 2012-13 regular season with back-to-back home games against St. John’s.

For 2012-13 Marlies ticket information, including season ticket packages and group seats, visit marlies.ca or call the team’s ticket line at 416-597-PUCK (7825).

AHL Adopts Video Review for 2012/13

(*From a June article, but I thought that it should be mentioned again here..)

As the AHL Board of Governors meeting concludes the league announces changes ahead of next season.

The American Hockey League is pleased to announce video review.

Hold off on the bronx cheer.

Although the wheels had been in motion for some time to include the advanced puck surveillance in AHL arenas, certainly the publicity garnered from the now infamous inability to rewind game three's overtime winner in the Calder Cup finals helped solidify the league's fast forward thinking.

If you are blessed with shortness of memory, the Marlies were plummeted into a 3-0 series deficit after a fluke goal scored by Norfolk defenceman Mike Kostka. A puck sent into the Marlies zone from centre ice careened around the boards, deflected off a stanchion, took a funny hop and crossed the goal line.

It left the 8,084 in attendance in shock.

The Toronto captain, Ryan Hamilton, stood at centre ice waiting for a replay to be shown on the scoreboard while head coach Dallas Eakins exited immediately for the dressing room.

The game had been scoreless up to that point, Ben Scrivens having played 69:09 of flawless hockey.
To make matters more complicated, further contemplation revealed the Norfolk team had a member of their forward unit off-side when the puck was shot. The correct interpretation of AHL rule 83.4 would have discounted the goal.

“83.4 Disallowed Goal – If the puck is shot on goal during a delayed offside, the play shall be allowed to continue under the normal clearing-the-zone rules. Should the puck, as a result of this shot, enter the defending team’s goal, either directly or off the goalkeeper, a player or an official on the ice, the goal shall be disallowed as the original shot was off-side. The fact that the attacking team may have cleared the zone prior to the puck entering the goal has no bearing on this ruling."

The AHL released a statement the following day regarding the goal and league president, Dave Andrews, joined Leafs TV's Paul Hendrick during game four to discuss the introduction of video review in the upcoming season.

In all fairness to the extremely irregular circumstances which the goal was scored under, both Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins and several players accepted the error as being something that had likely never happened before nor would ever happen again. It was a fluke.

This would not have been the first time controversy helped spark change.

Prior to the NHL moving to the centralized war room in Toronto ahead of the 2002/03 season, John LeClair scored a doozie during the 2000 conference quarterfinals between Buffalo and Philadelphia. Standing puzzled was then Sabres netminder Dominek Hasek after the puck had found its way into the net on a near impossible angle.

Although video review (at the time conducted by an official in a suite high above the ice) substantiated the goal, a broadcast camera angle later showed the puck ripping the twine on the side of the net to gain entrance. With play having already resumed, the goal stood.
Buffalo lost that game two playoff contest by a single goal.

Mistakes happen.

During the 2010/11 season as part of Jonas Gustavsson's AHL conditioning stint, the Swedish monster was robbed of a shutout when a Rochester goal was upheld despite it seemingly having been directed into the net by a body part. It's certainly easy to pass judgement when I had the benefit of video playback.

Not that these incidents didn't swing fortune in both directions.

On November 27th 2010, while Joffrey Lupul was being reintroduced to hockey with Syracuse after nearly a year away from the sport, the gritty winger was carried into the Marlies net as his line-mate scored. The referee ruled the net had been dislodged prior to the puck crossing the goal line, while video review would have proved otherwise. It would have been the go-ahead goal for the Crunch, instead Toronto notched the 2-1 winner with less than a minute left in the game.

It's comforting to know how the AHL has moved forward. Inclusion of video review offers a big step in league development. For those watching from either their regular arena seat or from home it adds to the credibility of the league and the high level of talent it offers.

The correction may not bring back that game three Calder Cup overtime, but it enforces the league's spot as the NHL's top development system as it evolves accordingly.

Rage Against the Machine said it best, "what better time than now?"

***

Following the conclusion of the AHL's Board of Governors meetings in South Carolina, the league announced minor alignment changes to the AHL's six divisions. The Abbotsford Heat will now play alongside Toronto, Hamilton, Cleveland (Lake Erie) and Rochester in the North Division. The Heat were an original member of the North before being moved to the West Division during 2011/12.

Grand Rapids have subsequently been moved into the Mid-West Division and Charlotte joins the newly renamed South Division (formerly the West Division).

The league also has adopted a hybrid icing rule on a trial basis until November 19th where the whistle will be blown if the defender is the first to reach the defensive zone face-off circle when retrieving an iced puck that has already crossed the red line (goal line / icing line).

***

Referee Marcus Vinnerborg announces his retirement from North American hockey after only two years with the NHL & AHL leagues. Vinnerborg was the first ever non-American or Canadian official in the NHL. Toronto is familiar with the Swedish referee as he was one of the two employed for game three of the Calder Cup finals.

Leafs’ Pest Leo Komarov Sets Sights On Sidney Crosby,
Or At Least His Number

Posted Image
Leo Komarov, right, has yet to play a game in North America, but the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect
— and self-described pest — might already be trying to get under the skin of one of the NHL’s top players.

Leo Komarov has yet to play a game in North America, but the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect — and self-described pest — might already be trying to get under the skin of one of the NHL’s top players.

How so? By deciding he will wear No. 87 this year with the Toronto Marlies.

“I played with it in Moscow for three years,” Komarov said of the number, which he unveiled at training camp Thursday. “I tried to get 71, but [Jerry] D’Amigo got it so that’s it. I don’t really care … It doesn’t really matter if you have 87 or 10 or something like that. It’s, like, whatever dude.”

When asked if he was aware that the No. 87 is associated with Crosby, who was born on August 7, 1987 and is paid US$8.7-million per season, Komarov nodded in agreement but did not seem to care.

“Yeah, I know that,” he said. “But Crosby is a big star and he plays in another league, so whatever.”

This is not Komarov being disrespectful. He is simply trying to live up to the reputation that eventually led to him being signed by the Leafs, whom drafted him back in 2006.

“He finishes every check, goes to the net very hard,” Dave Poulin, the Leafs’ vice-president of hockey operations, said of the 5-foot-11, 198-pound Komarov in May. “He drove the Russian guys crazy.”

Now, it is the 25-year-old’s job to drive players crazy in North America.

Komarov said he is disappointed the NHL is currently locked out, but that when he signed a one-year deal with the Leafs it was with the understanding that he could be sent down to the minors. His plan is to show that he belongs, so that when the NHL season finally resumes, he will have a spot with the big club.

“I’m going to try my best and see how far it’s going to go,” said Komarov, who won a league championship with Dynamo Moscow last season. “Whatever [the coach] wants to do, I will do it … I played on the first line [in the KHL], I didn’t have a lot of points, but I did my role and the coach liked it. I’m going to bring it over here too.”

When asked if he embraced his role as a pest, Komarov smiled.

“I don’t really like it, but it’s pretty easy to do,” he said. “It’s going to be my job, of course.”

Paul Ranger Excited For ‘New Beginning
With Toronto Marlies

Posted Image
In 2007-08, Ranger had scored 10 goals and 31 points for the Lightning, averaging more than 25 minutes per game
— the second-most on the team — as an all-purpose defender.

Nearly three years after walking away from a National Hockey League career, Paul Ranger walked up to every reporter and every person holding a camera at the MasterCard centre, the training facility for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies, and shook their hands.

It was the first day of the Marlies’ training camp, and the first day of the rest of Rangers’ hockey careeer. There has been plenty of speculation as to why Ranger, then a 25-year-old defenceman with the Tampa Bay Lightning, left the game in the first place. Personal reasons, we have been told. Ranger did not speak about it then, nor did he speak about it Thursday.

But after introducing himself, he talked about how good it was to be back after what seemed like an eternity away from the game he loved. And as spoke, his eyes went red and started to water.

Ranger managed to hold it together, but you could tell this was difficult for him. Something is buried back there in his past, and whatever it was nearly cost him his career. So this second chance is something special.

“It is a new beginning for me, in a way,” Ranger said, smiling. “It’s going to be a good road. I’m excited.”

The last time Paul Ranger laced up his skates in the NHL was on Oct. 22, 2009 when he played 17 minutes and seven seconds in a 5-2 win against the San Jose Sharks. Two days later, he left the team for personal reasons and did not return.

It was a shocking exit for a player who seemed poised for success. In 2007-08, Ranger had scored 10 goals and 31 points for the Lightning, averaging more than 25 minutes per game — the second-most on the team — as an all-purpose defender. But the following season, he played only 42 games because of a shoulder problem that eventually required surgery.

Then, after playing in eight games in 2009-10, Ranger walked away.

For a time, he studied at the University of Ottawa. But he eventually found his way back to the rink and Ontario Hockey League commissioner David Branch, who coached Ranger when he played for the Whitby Wildcats, asked if he wanted to help out with his old Major Bantam Triple-A team.

“It was a situation where it really was a win-win,” Branch said. “Paul’s a bright person. He has an ability to teach and pass along ideas and he brought instant credibility with the young guys.

“The other part was that the kids on the team kind of helped him get back the love of the game. Paul plays the game for all the right reasons. He plays it because he loves it. He plays it because it’s a game and for no other reason.”

As the season wore on, Branch said that he started to see a change in Ranger. The two never really talked about why he left or whether he would ever return, but Branch sensed that a fire had been lit.

“The defining moment was a tournament that we played in Port Huron, Mich., where we played a team from Shattuck-St. Mary’s,” Branch said. “It was a fabulous, back-and-forth game, but they scored an empty-net goal and we lost 7-5. On the way back, Paul says, ‘That’s the most fun I’ve had in years.’

“That was the moment. You could just feel it. You could tell a lot of things were going through his mind.”

After the team went all the way and won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship, Ranger was fully convinced that he needed to get back to playing. He missed the game. More than that, he missed being part of a team and working towards a common goal.

“We won the OMHA championships,” Ranger said. “I remember as a kid playing for that team, and we had the team to do it but never did. To go back and win it in a really exciting game against our rival, even as a coach, was the best feeling. It was the best I’ve felt in a long time.”

When the season ended, Ranger went into the gym and started working towards a comeback. He had simple goals at first: get back into game shape and hope some team would take a chance on him.

The Leafs were the first to call, offering a one-year American Hockey League contract.

“He never left our radar,” said Dave Poulin, the team’s vice-president of hockey operations. “But it had to be totally on the player’s time.”

“I didn’t really think about playing anywhere else, to be honest,” Ranger said. “This was a little bit of a blessing in disguise, you could say. I wanted to play here. I’ve thought about it actually for a year. It’s great to be home. I love my family and friends. It’s been a bit of a tough road, but it feels great to be here.”

Where this road will lead is entirely up to Ranger. He said he wants “to get back to where he was,” but is not thinking about a leap to the NHL just yet. Right now, he simply wants to feel what those 14- and 15-year-old kids he coached felt every time they stepped on the ice. He wants to play because it is fun.

“I love the game, pure and simple,” said Ranger. “There’s a lot of things I think that surround professional sports in general that a lot of people don’t see or choose to ignore, plain and simple. But for me, I love playing the game.”

Unplugged: Leafs’ Prospect Nazem Kadri
Trying To Be Positive During NHL Lockout

Nazem Kadri is trying to look on the bright side. Sure, the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect is obviously frustrated that

Nazem Kadri is trying to look on the bright side.

Sure, the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect is obviously frustrated that the NHL is locked out and he is back in the minors for a third straight season, especially after he spent the summer working out with fitness guru Gary Roberts. But he also realizes that while others are sitting out, he has a chance to play hockey and get a headstart for whenever the NHL season begins.

“It’s something I’ve worked for, so hopefully it all goes my way.”

On the first day of the Toronto Marlies training camp on Thursday, Kadri spoke to reporters about the differences between the AHL and the NHL and why he thinks this year is his opportunity to make something happen in his career:

Does coming to an American Hockey League training camp feel strange?
It always feels strange when after working out for a couple of months and have to come in for training camp. This is a first for me. I’ve never actually done a full American League training camp before. But I think I’ve prepared myself well.

Are you a little disappointed that the NHL is locked out?
Yeah, very disappointed. It’s frustrating when you’re working your bag off the whole summer to be locked out, but from a player’s standpoint no one wants to play without a fair deal, so we’re just playing the wait-and-game and I’m sure something will be resolved.

Are you surprised to see this much media attention for the AHL?
Yeah, I was going to say, I don’t think it’s normally like this. But with the lockout, I guess I’m going to have to get used to seeing you guys.

Is there incentive to play well, even though there’s no NHL?
Even with all the guys around the American League coming down, it’s going to be close to the NHL. There’s going to be some high level of talent that maybe there wasn’t in the past. It’s going to get us ready and on the bright side as well, once something does get resolved, we’re going to be in skating shape and mid-season form to be able to step into that NHL training camp and ready to go.

Can you look back at how the 2004-05 lockout helped players like Ryan Kesler and Eric Staal?
There’s been a ton of great players that have come out of this year. Even if you go to the lockout in ‘04, there was some unbelievable talent and one of the better leagues you can play in, but this is a developmental league, it’s a league that can prepare you, and to be here for one month or two months, or three months is really not going to hurt anybody.

How would you feel if the entire NHL season is lost?
It would be brutal. No one wants to see that, including fans, management, players, the list goes on. Winter’s not the same without [the NHL].

How do you feel about your game?
I feel great. I feel better than I have before. So it was unfortunate that I couldn’t participate in an NHL training camp this year, but this is just as good and I’m doing to my best here like it was an NHL camp.

You were a point-per-game player in the AHL. Do you think people overlook that?
Definitely. Hands down, it’s not easy to be a point-per-game player in this league, especially with the skill level I have and my skill-set I actually think it’s harder for myself to play in this league than the NHL.

While this year this is more talent and more skilled guys, usually, it’s a more north-and-south type game, more of a grinder’s [game] so to speak. Everyone’s hesitant to make mistakes. It’s tough. Guys are big and strong and I think there’s a couple of more meatheads in this league than in the NHL, so you’ve got to keep your head up all the time.”

How much weight did you put on?
I probably only put on four or five pounds. I’m a steady 185 right now. But I’m lean and that’s where I wanted to focus on this year, making sure I was lean and fast and my lower-body explosiveness got hands-down a lot better. I just want to show that on the ice.

RE: MARLIE GAMES ON TV

I have good news and bad news....

Bad News: I called the Marlies office.. and no pre-season game are "expected" to be broadcasted.. Posted Image(but.., there are only two.., as the Regular Season begins on October 13th..)

Good News: Seems like Sportsnet, TSN & CBC are thinking about adding AHL & OHL games.. and an agreement is in the process of being negotiated.. Posted Image

(Don't let Bettman in the room..! LOL! :P )... See the snipet from the Globe & Mail below here:

Channel Hopping

..."So what will TSN, Sportsnet and CBC show should the season not start on time on Oct. 11? To paraphrase the football jingle, Are You Ready For Some Minor League Hockey? Sportsnet is putting agreements in place with the American Hockey League and the junior Canadian Hockey League to show their games on its five channels.

In Sportsnet’s plan, Toronto fans might see the AHL Marlies games and OHL Brampton Battalion games on Sportsnet Ontario. Vancouver fans could see the Canucks’ Chicago Wolves affiliate and the WHL Vancouver Giants on Sportsnet Pacific. Depending on the length of the lockout, the volume of games could grow as the owners keep their star players sidelined.

TSN says “Like all hockey fans we are hopeful that an agreement can be worked out as soon as possible. But we are continuing to monitor the situation closely and looking at other programming options in the case of a lengthy work stoppage.” In lieu of hockey, TSN proposes expanded coverage of the MLS Playoffs, additional NFL from ESPN (including NFL Kickoff and NFL 32), expanded 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship coverage and additional NCAA Football and NCAA basketball games.

CBC could send Don Cherry on the road to visit players warming their hands by the barrel fire at the picket lines. Barring that, “CBC's first regular season game isn't until Oct. 11th, so there's no immediate need to roll out our plan as yet,” says CBC spokesman Chuck Thompson. “We'll go there when and if the league starts cancelling games.” So get the popcorn ready for Ron MacLean at the movies."...
