Leafs Begin Homestand Against Capitals

Season Series:

This is the first of three games this season. The Capitals seek to extend their winning streak against the Maple Leafs to four games.

Big Story:

Even in a shortened season, it is never reason to panic with just six games in the books. But Washington needs to turn the tide quickly or it will wind up behind the eight ball. With only three points and winless in three road games this season, the Capitals try to stop a Maple Leafs team coming off an exciting overtime win with just two seconds remaining against Buffalo on Tuesday.

Team Scope:

Capitals: A complete 60-minute effort by the Capitals has been rare in the early going, and their most recent loss Tuesday at Ottawa was another example of their struggle to maintain a lead. Troy Brouwer and Matt Hendricks staked Washington to an early 2-0 surplus and the team kept up the intensity well into the second period until the Senators' Jim O'Brien scored with just over a minute left. Milan Michalek would then tie it within the first two minutes of the third and the Capitals were finally done in by a Joel Ward penalty and a Sergei Gonchar game-winner in the closing minutes of regulation.

Despite the recently rough road, first-year coach Adam Oates is upbeat.

"On the road, if you're up 2-1 after two, you're in a great position," Oates told the Caps' official dunp 'n chase blog. "We were playing great hockey. They had one [scoring] chance, really. All game long they only had six [scoring] chances five-on-five, so we did a lot of good things."

Maple Leafs: Toronto needed a solid effort in its last game Tuesday versus the Sabres after coming off lopsided losses to the Islanders and Rangers. Forward Matt Frattin made his case for staying with the big-league club as the sometime AHL player tallied a goal in regulation and scored his second in dramatic fashion, making a nifty move past the defenseman and slipping a quick wrister past goalie Ryan Miller with just two ticks left on the OT clock to win it for the Maple Leafs.

Who's Hot:

Center Mike Ribeiro has a goal and two assists over his last three games for the Capitals. … Frattin has scored three goals in three games since being called up from the AHL's Toronto Marlies last Thursday.

Injury Report:

Forward Brooks Laich (groin) and defenseman Jack Hillen (upper body) are out for the Capitals. … The Maple Leafs are without forward Joffrey Lupul (broken forearm). Forward Clarke MacArthur sat out again Tuesday with a lacerated pinkie, while defenseman Mike Komisarek seeks to return soon after getting a sliver of fiberglass removed from his eye following practice Monday.

Leafs Assign Jake Gardiner To The Marlies

Posted Image

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that the hockey club has assigned defenceman Jake Gardinerto the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Gardiner, 22, appeared in two games for the Maple Leafs this season, registering four shots on goal. The 6-2, 184-pound defenceman missed the Leafs first two games of the season due to injury. The Marlies next game is Friday, February 1 in Rochester against the Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) at 7 p.m. The Marlies return home on Saturday, February 2 when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) at Ricoh Coliseum. I really hope the caps don't have Reims' number this year. The buds need this first win at home to get some momentum going.

Komisarek was shooting pucks on Monday, kept missing the net. Took it out on his stick and had chip land in his eye.

Posted ImageJonas Siegel@jonasTSN1050
Komisarek on his eye injury: "At the end of the day, don’t take it out on the stick and try to hit the net. It’s not the stick’s fault.”

Posted ImageJonas Siegel@jonasTSN1050
Great line from MacArthur on his injury: "Frustrated? Yeah it's frustrating when you're sitting out with an inch long injury on your pinky."

Posted ImageJonas Siegel@jonasTSN1050
Updates: MacArthur getting closer. Komisarek available. Shoulder injury for Brown. Flu for Orr.

Posted ImageMark Masters@markhmasters
Orr & Brown (UBI) not on the ice at Leafs practice; MacArthur with Steckel while McClement remains with Grabovski-Kulemin

I have a good feeling about this one... Caps really haven't had anyone's number yet, this season..

James Reimer again the projected starter tonight.

Posted ImageLeafs PR@LeafsPR
#Leafs have recalled forward Ryan Hamilton from the #Marlies of the AHL and placed forward Mike Brown on Injured Reserve.

Posted ImageJonas Siegel@jonasTSN1050
Based on morning line rushes, doesn't appear Clarke MacArthur will play tonight. Will await confirmation following skate.

Posted ImageJonas Siegel@jonasTSN1050
Ryan Hamilton skated on fourth unit with Colton Orr and Dave Steckel. MacArthur's status in doubt.

Game Prediction!

Leafs win 3-1
Leafs Goals: Phaneuf, Kulemin, Kadri
Caps Goals: Joey Crabb (it seems our former Leafs always burn us for atleast one)
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."

Sluggo's trade proposition for today has 42 points (23 goals, 19 assists) in 27 career games against Toronto, and you guys think Washington only gets one goal?
