Boras is his agent? Can't a plane crash with him in it?

What a great pick in Paxton.....I am extremely happy we picked him.
Jenkins was also an excellent pick...to whoever said stop drafting pitchers in the first round....are you crazy? You don't pass over pitching. If anything, the past couple of seasons a la Marcum, McGowan, and now Litsch should tell you that. |

Even if one of them turns out to be a solid 2-3 guy it was worth it.

And I'd rather work on getting the guys that will win games for us in the playoffs when our hitters are being shut down by star pitching.
Just like you can't win without goaltending, you can't win without great pitching. Look at 92-93 for an example of a team that knew how to pitch. ######, just look at their setup guy and closer in those years. ![]() ![]() |

Re: MLB Draft | #32 | ||

taking the best available players could open the door for trades in the future.
If we have like 6 great pitchers, MLB level, all starters. We don't need them all so we'd be willing to trade them to teams who do and in return, we get players of equal value. Its better to take best available then what you need, because if best available is better than what you need, you can trade what you got for what you need in a year or 2 and get a better player at the position you need than you would have drafted.

especially in baseball where 90% of picks will take AT LEAST 3 years... your needs now aren't likely to be the same in three years.

QUOTE (loxcane @ Jun 10 2009, 05:12 PM) And it's not like FA pitchers are just floating around without jobs and the teams who have pitchers even unproven are likely to hold on to them...see Glaus 4 Lincecum. |

Re: MLB Draft | #35 | ||

yeah, you could never ever ever ever have too much pitching... I mean if in 5 years two of these kids pan out and we already have Halladay(fingers crossed), Marcum, McGowan and Litsch, it gives us the ability to move something for the bat we'll most likely be missing... I mean that's not even considering the guys we already have. It's just good business to draft pitching. There's always a good bat on the free agent market that you could get for a DECENT price. big bats don't get overpaid like big arms, unless it's a special situation(or a special kind of idiot handing out the deal... see Andruw Jones)

Re: MLB Draft | #36 | ||

Ahrens is hitting .207 this year in single A, Cooper will be a poor mans Overbay. Arencibia and Snider are our only GOOD bats. You know, you'll need some offense to go along with some pitching. You can't win 0-0.

QUOTE (loxcane @ Jun 10 2009, 05:12 PM) Jays have needed some top starters for quite some years now and good DH and long term catcher for many years also. Name the last DH and C the Jays had for at least 4 straight years.

Re: MLB Draft | #38 | ||
QUOTE (api @ Jun 10 2009, 06:11 PM) Some of those bats are in the line-up - Lind and Hill. A line-up that has Lind, Snider, Hill, and Arencibia is a heckuva start. Once the current loudmouth GM is gone, free agency is a possibility and as someone mentioned a surplus of pitching is much more attractive from a trade perspective than hitting. |

Re: MLB Draft | #39 | ||

Hill is already 27? 28? He's not considered a "prospect" or a "youngster" anymore, Lind is already 26. If the player is any good, he should produce at the age of 24. I repeat, having 2 GOOD hitting prospects is nothing to be proud of. Check out other teams' hitting prospects compared to the Jays. Granted, their pitching prospects probably don't compare to the Jays' because of the amounts of pitchers they've selected.
