I live in Calgary now and can't believe I paid $200 bucks to get NHL Center Ice to watch the Leafs get spanked like this. However, I'm just venting and know that we'll be alright once our D gets used to each other and Kessel gets added to the line up. Somebody please reassure me of this!!!????

I was away in the US and only saw the highlights of the Washington game. Didn't Burke state that his reputation was at stake if the Leafs didn't make the playoffs? Can anyone tell me how the Monster looked in net?...apparently he also let in 3 goals but one highlight I saw he made the save and there was no Leaf defender around for miles!

It takes time for a new d to gel i dont know waht people dont udnerstand about it. Maybe some leaf fans and media get to get the *#+@ off their back and let them play hockey. Instead of booing your team every time they screw up how about cheering from start to end in your own arena!! maybe itll actually friggin work and make the players feel like their fans care and WANT them to do well. If we WANT them to win so bad maybe when we go to the games we should start ACT ing like it. I mean i could count several times where we will have a lead things will slow down for a minute and you could hear a bloody bomb go off in the acc and for 100 mies around its so damn quiet. Our fans need to show support no matter what. Kessel will add scoring but that is not enough. We need solid d and goaltending. It'll come.

You could almost see this one coming after Toskala let in the first goal on the first shot. It came only a couple of minutes into the game. The second goal wasn't Toska's fault, but once down two goals the team tried to do too much, and didn't play the patient defense first game they're supposed to be built for. |

Yep. I'm really starting to dislike Burke. Say what you will about him, but he cares about one thing and one thing only: promoting his own self-image.
He has his own personal agenda that will always come first before his team. He's too pompous and arrogant to sit by patiently and let his team rebuild slowly and properly. Instead he had to hastily trade away our draft picks, and then waste our valuable cap space on a bunch of big, tough stiffs like Komi and Beauch. It's too bad because this really should have been our year to draft our franchise player. If you take a look around the league all the teams below us have improved. NYI, TB, Colorado, Atlanta, LA & Phoenix all look MUCH better. If we had stayed the course and rebuilt properly we'd be a lock for the top 5. Oh well. Don't let me ruin your spirits. |

Lol two games into the season and the whole leaf nation is going berserk. When a team adds about 5 new players, and most of them playing the same position (Defence) it takes awhile for chemistry to build. The players need to learn their strengths and weaknesses and play based off what their teammates strengths and weaknesses are. Knowing where their partner is on the ice at all times and knowing its ok to pinch cuz they are covered by their partner. These things take more then 4 or 5 preseason games. This applies to ALL sports. When you add a bunch of new players it will take awhile to start seeing the results. October for the leafs won't we very good, but I can guarantee after November it's all +.500 hockey from there. Even if Toskala doesn't improve, we all know Gustavsson or even Macdonald can take the reigns in net. Wow....two games in. Did you know the penguins werent even in a playoff spot until the last few weeks of the season? And what happened, they took the division and won the cup! Or if you want to argue that Pittsburgh is way better then the leafs then I will give you a maple leaf example. The last time the leafs made the playoffs (the 2003-2004 season) the leafs were 1-3-1 in their first 5 and still made the playoffs. The year before that (2002-2003) if you all remember, the leafs started the season with 3 wins in 12 games, and still made the playoffs. Chillax people, the Leafs will improve. God, people are already asking for Burke's head like wtf is up with you people?

lol typical fans from leaf nation. 2 game losses and its like we will finish last or in the bottom 5.
I dont expect a good month in October, but it will get better. Youngbud, reason why there is not much cheer from start to end is cuz half the seats in the leafs game is filled with suits, and other half tix are 150+, and not a lot of leaf fans have that kind of money to be spending on 1 regular season game. |

What's so crazy about us finishing in the bottom 5?? All the teams that finished below us are a lot better than last year. In fact, with our goaltending I wouldn't be surprised if we did finish in the bottom 5. It's hard to think of another team that has worse goaltending than us.

lmao, i cant believe some of you people. now were saying komi was a bad pick up (when everyone was so excited) and before the season started most said that our goaltending was saved by the monster (now some are saying its the worst in the league). burke was suppost to be our saviour and bring the cup back to toronto (and now people are disliking him). i as a leafs fan am disgusted to be cheering for a team with some of the fans that we have. just shut up, stick with your team, cheer them on no matter what. let the guys learn to play together, let kessel return, and then at the end of the season we can talk about what we did RIGHT and what we need to improve on, instead of always stating everything we did wrong. for the people that do nothing but put down the leafs and talk about how mad they are, there is room on the montreal band wagon right about now. maybe its time you jump ship and move on. |

don't let the people on the board get to you....a lot of leaf fans are either A) only happy when it rains, which is apparent when the Leafs win because they're nowhere to be seen on the board or B) they had had some outrageous expectations and crash hard when the team doesn't live up to it.
it's the 2nd game, against a team that is a serious contender...it was a good measuring stick for the leafs...the first two periods were pretty much awful, but the third they did fight back and made it a little closer than i expected. i'm not ready to talk about draft picks yet but i'm not exactly predicting a cup either. it takes time for D-men to gel and i'm willing to give them more than 2 games to do it. i know some of them played together in the preseason but the top 4 didn't really play all that much..it's still going to take time...people need to take a deep breath and realize it's a process, a process that the team and the coaching staff will have to work through.

The team will be fine. The defencemen just have to relax and not try over-hard and pinch at the wrong times, and the goaltending has to settle down. The forwards aren't half bad, but need to do a more consistant job of coming back. Some of them are, and some of them are getting caught up ice too regularly. But there's enough talent here to grab a playoff spot IF the goal-tending smartens up.

How about trying different d-pairings till something actually works. Rotate the goalies till one takes off. I know we need to be patient, but leaf fans wont tolerate this ##%@ for too long man.

Leafs are a rush job IMO. We do everything wrong. We trade away first round picks with out having been in the playoffs for 5 years. We trade away young assets for poor returns and we rush our young, unproven players instead of letting them develop at a slower pace. Essentially, we do the exact opposite of what Detroit does.

gustavsson played really well that game in my opinion, the caps were really hot and entering cold let up those three goals, however afterwards the monster turned made them cold, and helped spark a failed(but close) comeback, if he was in net all night we would have won 4-3(well maybe)
hope he plays the sens |

3 actually....they did get a point in the habs game. but it's still only the second game. i of course want them to win as many as they can, but after 2 games i think we just need a little realistic perspective

The only thing that can be gauged in the opening weeks of the season is a few individual performances as it takes most teams 10-20 games to begin working together effectively. Early in the season individual players, especially young ones, often show only a flash before settling into the ordinary. How often have we seen a fast start wear down into a pointless streak by mid-November or December? Take a look back at the points the Leafs had after the first ten games in each of the last 8 seasons, 4 in and 4 out of the playoffs:
00-01 12 01-02 12 02-03 7 03-04 11 05-06 12 06-07 11 07-08 9 08-09 11 Not really much useful information there with the opening 10 games not appearing to have an undue effect on the end result. The first three seasons the point total required to make the playoffs was under 90, but the rule changes in subsequent seasons moved it up a few points. Making the playoffs has required around 92 points in the East the last five seasons and that means a team needs to average between 11 and 12 points per 10 games to make 8th place. Four of the last five seasons the team was close to, or ahead of, that pace after the first 10 games, but gradually settled into mediocrity as the opposition became more effective and the inevitable problems each team has to deal with took their toll. The Leafs have so many new faces this season that they are one of the teams that will be most difficult to judge until we are deeper into the season. They are more talented than the last few years but now that talent has to work together in the pressure of the regular season. The pairing of Beauchemin and Schenn is a case in point: whom did those guys play with last season and what were their styles like? Last season the Moore - Blake pairing was a pleasant surprise, and it led Moore straight out the door unsigned until this week when he developed an inflated sense of his own value. This season the potential for effective pairs is far greater than last season but it takes time for things to develop. The primary concern obviously is Toskala. I have never believed he is anything but a journeyman goalie, perfect for a fringe playoff team or as a backup but not a solid guy season in and season out. Unlike most, I view Gustavsson as a question mark until he has had at least 10-20 games under his belt. If he does show he can play at this level the next question will be his stamina over a full season: travel in the SEL is nothing like the NHL, let alone the game action itself. The one year contract will out pressure on him to perform, but as long as he shows he can stop shots at this level his season long conditioning is something that can be addressed over the summer. This is the best Leafs team in a number of seasons, but only on paper at this point. When things shake out there will be some disappointing performances but there are some decent players itching for a chance to prove themselves who can come up and take their shot. Until we this team becomes more familiar with one another we won't really have an idea if this team will end up in the playoffs or just outside. I can't see them mixing it with the bottom feeders this season unless every move made by Burke is a bust, but it will take more than a few games to see improvement. |
